The Saint Francis Xavier softball Wildcats opened their 2008 season last week with games against Milton Middle School on Thursday and Winooski Middle School on Friday. Both games came down to the wire with the Wildcats coming up just short.

The 8-6 loss against Milton featured 8th grade Co-captains Beth Wild Thing L. pitching to Lena Chicken Little C. Wild Thing picked up 6 strike-outs in the losing effort. Aggressive defensive support was supplied by Sarah Firecracker L. (7th grade) at third base and Alicia Wheels M. (6th grade) at shortstop. Also impressive in their rookie debuts were Fearless Fleur D. (5th grade) and Pierrette Pirate L. (6th grade).

The 8-7 loss against Winooski saw relief pitcher Lauren G. put in a strong 5 inning performance in which she struck out 8 batters. She also hit a deep single in the 6th inning to pull the Wildcats to within one run. Offensive support was also provided by Wild Thing, Fearless Fleur, Chicken Little, and Kayla I'm still working on my nickname S. (5th grade) who all had base hits.

Coaches Chris Horton and Jesse Gaudette appreciate the strong support of the St. Francis community who attended these games in good numbers (and even umpired thanks Mr. Lavallee!). We're a young team, but we have great speed and spirit. Expect to see us steal a lot of bases this year, said Coach Horton.

The Wildcats will face Camel's Hump Middle School May 5th, followed by games against Colchester Middle School (May 7th) and Lyman C. Hunt Middle School in Burlington (May 8th). GO WILDCATS!
